      Some Thoughts About Communication and Successful Working and Learning Environments

      Most people don’t feel heard

      Often, people believe that they never get their ideas fostered, originality credited, “can-do” attitude praised, or contributions acknowledged. Instead, they think that intractable and lazy people get all of the attention. And 80% of the time, they’re correct.

      There’s no one “right” way to communicate

      Some people gravitate to formal jargon; others reject certain phrases for fear of betraying their essential selves. While Standard English is the benchmark in professional settings and the academy, our dialects, slangs and colloquialisms provide unique opportunities to express our individuality. Remember, “appropriate” language is situationally and culturally adaptable and always in flux​.

      Motivation, influence and trust fall through the cracks of indirect communication

      We often feel ill-equipped to communicate what we really think. At times, all communication seems like one big charade. We’ve all shared rooms with unacknowledged elephants and avoided conversations. While collaborating with people entails suppressing some of our most immediate impulses, there is always plenty of room for hard truth.​

      Metrics aren’t everything--and we naturally overvalue certain data points

      Compensation and grades do not solely dictate our worth, nor should they serve sole motivators to work hard and succeed. While metrics serve as objective evidence to show us which way the needle moves, other compelling, less tangible, indicators exist. If we don’t look at them, we don’t see a complete picture of progress.

      Engaging our clients, students and customers is not "value-added"—it’s a mandate

      We guess way more than we ask people what they want and need. When people understand how what they do directly relates to a larger mission, they become more invested, obstacle-averse and solution-focused.​

      Strategic, holistic, sustainable and innovation are current buzzwords

    • Who We Are

      John Mancuso, Owner

      John Mancuso is a seasoned educator and writer. Over the course of his career, he oversaw the creation of two Associates and Bachelors level academic programs and has written courses, webinars, presentations and learning experiences for college students, professors, Executives, administrators, managers and hourly contributors.

       

      Most recently he has served as the internal training consultant for the 47, 000 employees that make up North America’s largest transportation agency, the New York City Transit Authority (MTA), customizing curricula in such disparate areas as IT, Legal, Design, Capital Construction, Subway Operations, Security and Infrastructure. He also wrote and executed a three-day leadership series as a succession plan for the 44% of retirement-eligible employees. Before Transit, John served as the Department Chair of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Art Institute of New York City.

       

      John has taught myriad topics related to business and human resources, such as conflict resolution, project management, communication, social intelligence, strategic planning and coaching for managers. John has also facilitated peer-to-peer professional development and served as keynote speaker at post-secondary institutions and national conferences. John has garnered numerous creative and academic publications, including textbooks, ancillary teaching resources and creative prose in both fiction and nonfiction. Additionally, John taught English for many years at the post-secondary level.

       

      He has a certificate in Adult Learning Transfer from the City University of New York; a BS in Mass Communications from Emerson College in Boston, Mass; an MA in English from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT; and an MA in fiction writing from the University of Texas at Austin.

       

      In the nascent stages of John’s professional trajectory, he served in such disparate roles as cemetery plot salesman, radio host, dancing M&M, and Brady Bunch trivia expert, which earned him an appearance on the Sally Jesse Raphael show. John began marathon running in his 40’s, and has since completed four. This endurance and stamina illustrate that he can take you all the way to finish in whatever effort you endeavor. He splits his time between Manhattan and Delhi, a small Catskill Mountain town in Upstate New York.
